Dutch Schulze has been
blowing glass for twenty years, and is best known for his blown
glass vessels with their evocative design and rich colors. These
large vases and fluted bowls can be found in fine homes and
galleries throughout the country. Dutch is a versatile artist who
began his career thirty years ago as a sculptor. He was drawn to
sculpture after studying Art and Art History in Bregenz, Austria.
After his graduation from the University of Missouri he moved to the
Colorado Rockies and began sculpting in wood. Dutch specialized in
the art of carving in bas relief. In 1975 he moved to the Oregon
Coast and began sculpting in clay with the intent of casting in
bronze. By 1980 word of “The Studio Art Glass Movement” reached
Southern Oregon, and Dutch recognized the possibilities of using
glass as his medium and began learning the pate de vere technique of
kiln casting. This led to sand casting when the crucible of Plum
Tree Glass Studio became available to him in 1984. Soon after, he
began assisting the glassblowers and practicing their skills.
In 1991, Dutch and his
wife, Aro, opened their own studio, Vitra Blown Glass. Focusing on
blown glass, Dutch developed his signature “Dreamscape” series. In
1997 Dutch moved the shop to the nearby coastal resort town of
Bandon, Oregon and opened Bandon Glass Art Studio and Gallery.
Although the past years
have been mostly occupied with Blown-glass, Dutch always found time
to work with glass sculpture. Last year, he quit blowing glass for
Galleries other than Bandon Blown Glass Studio to devote all his
time to his sculpture.
