The subject of this sculpture, entitled "Danaid", was taken from the Greek Myth of that name. In this myth,  Danus, a king of Argos, arranges the marriage of all his daughters to the sons of his nemesis.  Danus then commands his daughters to murder their new husbands on their wedding night. They successfully carry out his command, but the act outrages the Great God Zeus, who then condemns the daughters to an eternity of drawing, carrying, and pouring water into a bottomless vessel in Hades.

I find this myth fascinating, and an apt metaphor for so many tedious jobs in our modern culture, that are endless, but  provide no sense of accomplishment or satisfaction.

The image of the young woman that I chose to replicate in this relief sculpture was taken from a J.W.Waterhouse painting entitled "The Danaides".
