This is the same figurative relief as my Danaid in Blue
Arch, but I cast it in the negative. This means that the front of
the sculpture that is shown here is smooth, while the back is open
with the relief details sculpted in reverse. This type of sculptural
presentation was popularized by the late Frederick Hart using
acrylic (a type of plastic), as the medium. At that time Crystal
wasn't easily available or he would have used it because Cast
Crystal is a finer material than acrylic, it doesn't scratch as
easily, doesn't yellow in the sunlight, and doesn't deteriorate over
time - ever. The reason for this reverse or "negative"
presentation, is the mysterious visual effect it produces. This
can't be represented in a photograph, but when you view it in
person, the figure appears to be an apparition, a fascinating
vision.
